Zombie, Run!

Just bought this app for the iPhone and I am totally addicted. It definitely motivates you during your run! While you are running you can still listen to your own music, but you also hear an immersive storyline about trying to get away from chasing zombies! When you get home you can organize the items you've collected on your run and continue build to your base. It really makes you want to run everyday to hear the next step in the story. And this is just the beginning! It costs $7.99 but if you're looking to spice up your run it's totally worth it. Check out at video at the link:

Week Six - Staying Strong

I haven't missed a run yet. I've stopped short on only three runs and that was when I was running outside in the middle of July. Now my runs outside are a full 30 mins, with absolutely no walk breaks. I'm proud of that! Walks breaks are okay, especially according to Jeff Galloway, but I probably won't incorporate them into my short runs if I don't need them. I'm feeling a lot stronger!

My next long run is 7 miles and I don't even feel that intimidated. Of course I'll be running it on the treadmill, but longer runs outside will come as the weather cools down. But still, that's only half of a half mile! Just over a quarter of the way to a marathon! At this point that half marathon in November seems reachable, but I'm still pretty wary about the marathon. I talked to my roommate and she said the last ten miles is the most physical pain you will ever experience. But I guess if it were easy, everyone would do it.

I'm looking to buy a hydration belt as my longer runs approach but I'm not sure exactly what I want. Disney sponsors the iFitness belt so I've been looking at those. I definitely want a belt that will hold my phone and cards during the big race, but I probably won't need a lot of hydration on me since Disney has so many pit stops. Still deciding, but this is the one I am considering.

Hydration Belt

I've also been looking for new running shoes, since I think my Nikes are technically for walking. (They are my old work shoes.) But so far they have done me well so maybe changing it up is not the best idea, especially since new running shoes are so expensive! And there's so many to choose from! I just can't decide yet.

Soon they will announce Mickey's new marathon medal! And since it will be my first I am pretty excited to see it! I better own that thing one day.

Week One

This past week was the official start to the Jeff Galloway WDW Marathon training schedule, and to make things even more interesting I was on vacation. I was at the beach for the 4th of July so it was my first test getting off the treadmill and on the road (or in this case the sand). Turns out everyone is right and three miles is way tougher on the outside. I barely made it two miles Thursday and Saturday, which were my scheduled days to run while on vacation, and that even includes walk breaks. Sure I wasn't on the best diet of barbecue and ice cream, but yesterday I got on the treadmill and I could do three miles just fine, so location DOES make all the difference.

Since someday I should be running 26.2 miles outside I know I need to keep working at it and not give up. So here's the advice I've taken into consideration:

1. Start slow It's true! Switching from treadmill to street is not a piece of cake. If you need to run slower, take more walk breaks, or even run a shorter distance that's okay.

2. Don't get discouraged Keep running outside at a regular amount per week or you will lose your momentum. Only settle for the treadmill if you are really short on time or the weather is just out of control.

3. Work around extreme weather I live in Florida so year round it is HOT. Wake up earlier to run, slow down your pace and drink a lot of water. If you can run in the summer, you can definitely run when the weather isn't so tough.

Next week I will start running one short run outside, then both short runs in August and hopefully by September I will be able to only run outside and use the treadmill if I have to.

Get outside, stay outside, but don't push yourself too hard.

This is my first race EVER (Intro)

I've been running 3 days a week for a little over a month now just to get myself primed for Galloway's supposed "beginners" routine. I'm in reasonable shape, but for now I'm only running about two to two and a half miles per run and only on the treadmill, just to make sure I don't break anything too soon.

I'm using am awesome app for the iPhone called "Easy 5k" by Jeff Galloway. It was free when I got it, but now it runs about $3.99. (They just released one for half marathon training but it's a little more pricey at $14.99.) You can download coaching tracks from Jeff so he'll cheer you on during your run and give you tips. And the best part: the tracks are free! It also lets you sync your iPod music to the pace of your running based on the BPM, which I think is a huge plus! I'm hoping the half marathon/marathon app goes on sale before I need it!

The other thing I've already taken care of is headphones. And this was a major pain! I have very small ears and my classic iPod buds wouldn't stay in more than a few minutes. I tried my boyfriend's similar in-ear headphones and no luck. So I finally gave in and went to Walmart. I bought some cheap clip-ons by Philips, figuring the over the ear had to work (and I don't have too much cash to spend). Way too big! To get them to stay while running, I had to position the speaker way away from my ear.

After returning those, I decided to do a little research in the store. Without making too much of a mess I found these babies:

These are worth the money! Especially if you have very tiny ears like mine. They have been working fantastic, and thankfully because I couldn't manage to run much longer without music!
